Garage Conversion: Creating a Fully Accessible Ground Floor

A complete home adaptation combining accessible design, practical living space and expert project management

After picture of garage conversion for accessible ground floor

The Challenge: Creating a fully accessible living space

The project required much more than simply adapting an existing bathroom.

The aim was to transform the garage into a useful, comfortable and accessible ground-floor living space. We created a new snug/bedroom alongside a level-access ensuite, while also introducing level access throughout the entire downstairs of the property.

This meant considering how the different areas would connect and ensuring that accessibility was built into the design from the outset.

The project included several different elements that needed to work together, including:

  • Converting the existing garage into a new living space
  • Creating a level-access ensuite
  • Introducing a snug/bedroom
  • Providing level access throughout the entire downstairs
  • Relocating the mains electricity supply
  • Installing new doors and windows
  • Creating improved access from the main hallway
  • Ensuring the work met building control requirements
  • Completing new flooring and decoration throughout the adapted areas

With so many different aspects involved, careful design, coordination and project management were essential.

Our solution:: A complete accessible ground floor garage conversion

Working to a tight deadline, we coordinated the project from start to finish, completing the bathroom transformation swiftly.

Key elements of the project included:

  • Removal of the existing bath and installation of a walk-in shower
  • Installation of a low-threshold sliding door shower enclosure
  • Fitting of a slip-resistant shower tray to provide safer underfoot access
  • Installation of a thermostatic, cool-touch bar valve.
  • Installation of a comfort-height WC to make everyday use easier
  • Replacement of the existing basin and pedestal
  • Easy-clean wall panelling and redecoration
  • Installation of an infrared ceiling-mounted panel heater
  • Rehanging the bathroom door to improve access

The project required the coordination of installers, decorators and electricians at short notice, with every stage carefully managed to ensure the work could be completed within the available timeframe.

The results: A future-proofed home that supports greater independence

The completed garage conversion has created a fully accessible downstairs environment, giving the customer independent level access throughout the ground floor.

The new snug/bedroom and level-access ensuite provide additional usable space, while the carefully considered connections between the rooms make the whole area easier to navigate.

For the customer, the key benefits include:

  • Full level access throughout the downstairs
  • Greater independence within the home
  • A dedicated accessible ensuite
  • A practical new living or sleeping space
  • A home that has been future-proofed around changing needs
  • A single team managing the project from design through to completion

Just as importantly, the project demonstrates that accessibility doesn’t have to mean making isolated changes to individual rooms. By considering the downstairs space as a whole, Taylor-Made Mobility was able to create a more cohesive solution that supports the customer’s needs now while allowing for the future.

“Delighted” and have asked us to undertake further work. – The client

More than an accessible bathroom installation

One of the most important aspects of this project is the breadth of work involved.

Taylor-Made Mobility is often associated with accessible bathrooms, but this project demonstrates the wider range of skills and expertise the team can bring to a home adaptation.

From the initial design process and garage conversion through to electrical coordination, building control, access solutions, flooring and decoration, the project was managed as a complete home adaptation.

That means the customer could work with one trusted team rather than having to coordinate multiple contractors themselves.

For complex accessibility projects, this kind of end-to-end project management can make a significant difference. It brings the different elements of the work together, helping to ensure that the finished space works as a whole.

The work that Taylor-Made did on my property was spectacular. There was complete attention to detail. They listened, they cared, they treated my house like it was their house that they were working on. they went above and beyond. When they encountered problems in the house that hadn't been anticipated, they simply pivoted and made course corrections and ensured that the problem was solved and that the issue was fixed before moving on with the project. They had to do a lot more work than we had originally anticipated but they still came in on time with the project because of the dedication of the whole team who worked tirelessly. And when I found a couple of small snagging issues after being in the house for a couple of weeks they came back and fixed them immediately with no complaints. The really are a wonderful company who are dedicated to their customers and their needs. My accessible home means so much more to me because the team who made it accessible poured themselves into it and really gave so much to ensure that my home would be accessible not only now but into the future as well. Incredible team, amazing work, fantastic eye to detail. Would recommend this company to everybody looking for people to work on their home, driveway, or roof because Taylor-Made have the skills and they have the team of dedicated people who will work hard and treat your home with the respect it deserves.

I'm pleased I chose Taylor Made Mobility to provide my bathroom conversion. James and Jay, who installed it, were so hard working, friendly and respectful. Nothing was too much trouble. Everything was clearly explained each day and they answered all of my questions. Paul looked after me as promised, keeping my son informed of progress and checking on me every day. I am very happy with the end result and would have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone. Many thanks for your patience and your hard work. Sheila Thomas

I’m absolutely delighted with my bathroom makeover by Taylor-Made Mobility. From start to finish, the team have been professional and reliable. Paul set out a perfect design plan for me which has transformed the space into a bright, modern, and beautifully finished bathroom, thoughtfully designed with comfort and independence in mind. The whole installation by James plus electical work by Alan was efficient, tidy, and handled with real care. Fixtures were fitted with precision and the area kept tidy throughout the project. Everyone involved communicated clearly with me throughout, which made the whole process surprisingly stress‑free. I was so impressed with how they listened to what I wanted and offered thoughtful suggestions that genuinely improved the final result. I couldn’t be happier with the result. It’s safe, stylish, and so easy to look after. I’d recommend Taylor-Made Mobility without hesitation to anyone looking for a high‑quality, trustworthy team for a bathroom renovation. I can honestly say my expectations have been exceeded.

We were very happy with our experience with Taylor-Made. Paul took account of my husband's needs and our preferences when designing our wet room. The work was carried out to a very high standard by fitters who were a pleasure to have in the house. They were always on time and left everything clean and tidy at the end of the day. As a result we have a lovely bathroom which looks great as well as being practical and safe for someone with restricted mobility.

We have a had a wonderful experience with Taylor-Mobility. The results have been transformative. The designer/manager Paul was very attentive, considered making our en-suite useable! It was clear the fitter James too had a sense of pride in what they do. No gaps, sloppy sealants or drains that don’t work. There is NO water outside the show door on the mat. The door has handles on inside and out in right places that are solid. The shower head is wonderful. The work was done in the days allotted with minimum of fuss care and tidying up so as not impact the rest of the house. They were also *affordable* Paul designed with concern that we did not have massive budget and looked to what would get the bathroom working again and swapped in their own sink free of charge! All in all I can without hesitation recommend them as they know the impact of what they can do can make and do not pump up price (rather do the opposite). The work was done very efficiently - checked every day by the manager. Both showed pride in their work and doing a goood job. As we get older more is going to be needed and I am so glad to have found them! Highly recommend.

Paul was an absolute pleasure to work with; he could not have been more proactive, kind and helpful. We were working within a very tight time schedule which could have proved extremely challenging. Paul however coordinated a rebuild, purchasing of all bathroom supplies, changes to electrics & plumbing, plastering and redecorating in the space of 6 weeks from our first meeting to having a completed fantastic accessible bathroom for a wheelchair user. It goes without saying I would highly recommend Taylor-Made Mobility from start to finish. The attention to detail and care taken with their clients is second to none. Thank you Paul.

Knee arthritis means baths are now out of the question, so decided to have bath ripped out and replaced by a walk-in shower. At the design stage Paul visited twice to ensure I’d be happy with the plans we’d worked out together. Set aside a week for the job, but was done very efficiently in three days by Paul’s craftsman. Thanks to both for a high level of personal service and a job well done. Can recommend without reservation.

This is the second time we have used Paul to adapt a shower and again he came up trumps, solving problems and providing exactly what was needed. All done with kindness and humour and James the fitter was excellent. Can't thank him enough.

The experience of working with Taylor Made Mobility to install an accessible shower for my Mum was very positive. At no stage did we feel rushed, pressured, or upsold and Paul went to great pains to include me in the process via online meetings and emails, as I was in another time zone and unable to be present in person. Paul let us know when we should expect the team to arrive, what the plan was each day, and how long it would take. They fulfilled these expectations. He communicated throughout and sent photos to me of the work when it was done. During the installation, my mum ended up needing some medical attention and was briefly away from home but the team found a way to work around the situation and complete the job as planned. They returned as soon as it was convenient for Mum to put up some finishing touches at the correct height for her. This was just one example of the thoughtfulness and courtesy with which they treated my Mum. It may not be the cheapest option but I would say that the good service, quality materials, and well thought out accessibility features are worth it. Thank you, Paul, and team!
