Transforming a traditional property into a fully accessible, future-proof home

The challenge: not designed with accessibility in mind

This project involved a full property renovation of a three-bedroom detached house in Oxford, owned by a church and intended to support their disabled pastor.

The property was not originally designed with accessibility in mind, presenting significant barriers to everyday living. The goal was to create a fully accessible home environment, enabling safe, independent movement throughout the entire property—both internally and externally.

This required a complete rethink of the layout, access points, and essential features, while ensuring the home remained practical, comfortable, and cohesive.

Our solution: a comprehensive renovation project

Delivered over three months, this was a comprehensive accessibility-focused renovation, combining structural alterations with specialist mobility adaptations.

Key elements of the project included:

  • Installation of a level access bathroom (upstairs), designed for safe and easy use
  • Creation of an accessible downstairs cloakroom for added convenience
  • Integration of rise and fall basins to support flexible, user-friendly access
  • Installation of five new low-threshold uPVC doors, improving access throughout the property
  • Construction of a level access, block-paved driveway, ensuring smooth movement between the garage, utility room, and front entrance
  • A full electrical rewire to Doc M standards, aligning the property with accessibility best practices
  • A new hand-built staircase, tailored on-site to suit the revised layout
  • Full redecoration and new flooring throughout, creating a cohesive finish

During the renovation, we also identified and resolved additional structural issues, including the replacement of two failed flat roofs, ensuring the long-term safety and integrity of the property.

Every aspect of the project was carefully planned to deliver a fully integrated accessible living environment, rather than isolated adaptations.

The completed renovation has transformed the property into a safe, accessible, and future-proof home, tailored to the needs of its occupant.

By combining level access design, mobility-focused features, and structural improvements, the space now supports:
