The Safe Sanctuary: Accessible Ensuite Bathroom Renovation After a Fall

A practical ensuite transformation designed for safety, independence and everyday ease

Accessible ensuite bathroom design

The challenge: limited mobility impacting safety

Following a fall, the client needed an ensuite bathroom renovation that would significantly improve safety and usability. The existing space had become difficult to navigate, with traditional fixtures creating barriers to everyday use.

The priority was to design a fully accessible ensuite bathroom that reduced risk, improved confidence, and supported independent living, without making the space feel clinical or restrictive.

Our solution: bespoke bathroom design

We delivered a bespoke accessible bathroom design, tailored specifically to the client’s mobility needs and the layout of the existing ensuite.

Key features of the renovation included:

  • A level-access walk-in shower, removing the need to step over a bath or tray
  • Carefully positioned grab rails and support features to enhance stability and safety
  • Slip-resistant flooring to minimise the risk of future falls
  • A comfort-height toilet and accessible basin for ease of use
  • A reconfigured layout to maximise space and improve movement within the room

Every element was chosen to align with best practices in mobility bathroom design, where features like walk-in showers and non-slip flooring are essential for reducing hazards and improving usability.

The result is a space that balances functionality, safety, and modern design, ensuring the client feels both secure and comfortable.

The results:

The completed ensuite now provides a safe, accessible, and easy-to-use environment, tailored to the client’s daily routine.

By removing physical barriers and introducing supportive design features, the new space enables:

  • Greater independence and confidence when using the bathroom
  • A significantly reduced risk of slips and falls
  • A more comfortable and practical daily experience

Accessible bathrooms are proven to support long-term independence and safety, particularly through features like level-access showers and improved layout design.

Beyond functionality, the renovation also delivers a clean, modern finish—demonstrating that accessible bathroom design can enhance both quality of life and overall home value
